Three seasons.
One way in.

Start at Season 1, continue to Season 2, then finish with Season 3.

The Squid Game seasons in order are straightforward: 1 → 2 → 3. You can follow the original Korean drama in that numbered order without adding a prequel, a reality competition or a bonus feature between seasons. This guide keeps the practical details in view and leaves the game results, character fates and ending unexplained.

It covers Hwang Dong-hyuk’s scripted series. Squid Game: The Challenge is a separate title with a different viewing purpose; you will find that distinction below.

The watch order and episode counts

Watch next Episodes Your place in the story
Season 1 9 Begin here
Season 2 7 Continue the story
Season 3 6 Watch the final season

That makes 22 drama episodes in total. Netflix’s series hub lists the nine Season 1 episodes. Its official Season 2 announcement confirms seven, and its Season 3 overview confirms six.

Why starting at Season 1 matters

New players and settings do not make each season a fresh starting point. Netflix’s season descriptions connect the later chapters to earlier events. Watching in sequence lets you meet the characters before learning what their choices mean to one another.

Our recommendation is to treat the seasons as three blocks of one continuing story. Finish the episodes within each block in their displayed order, then move to the next season. There is no alternate chronology to arrange for a first watch.

If you have only seen clips, give the first episode room to introduce its own rules. A memorable costume, number or game is only one piece of the series. Starting with the complete episode makes those fragments part of a scene and a relationship.

Is Season 3 the final season?

Yes: Netflix identifies Season 3 as the third and final season of the original Korean drama. This statement applies to that scripted story. It does not turn every related programme or experience carrying the Squid Game name into another chapter you must insert.

For planning a first watch, the useful boundary is the 22-episode drama. You can decide how quickly to work through those episodes without waiting for a missing fourth season to complete this particular order.

Where does The Challenge fit?

Squid Game: The Challenge is a reality competition inspired by the drama. Netflix’s official Media Center page describes a competition involving real contestants, strategy, alliances and elimination. Its seasons are counted under its own title.

It is optional for following the scripted story. You do not need to place a season of The Challenge between drama Seasons 1 and 2, or between Seasons 2 and 3. If your aim is to follow the drama’s characters, stay with the numbered drama seasons first.

If the competition format is what interests you, open The Challenge as its own watch. Check the complete title in your search results or watch list so that an episode from one programme does not get mistaken for the next episode of the other.

Three decisions for a new viewer

Can I jump to the latest season?
You can select it, but our first-watch recommendation is Season 1. The later seasons depend on relationships and decisions established earlier.

Do I need a recap before starting?
A new viewer can begin with Season 1, Episode 1. Save recaps, ending explainers and later-season cast articles until you reach their point in the story.

Should I check the cast before watching?
If you prefer to discover identities as the series reveals them, wait. Our Season 3 cast guide is useful once you reach that season, but it names characters and the actors behind them.

Choose the audio and subtitle presentation you are comfortable following, then keep the same episode order. You can build a richer list of interviews and other performances afterwards; the first task is simply finding the beginning.
